Chicago postmatch

Voice? What voice? The ref started poorly and got worse. He's on my Rascal Flatts list.

And since I know you're curious, my Rascal Flats list is the list of people I would kneecap, dickpunch, headbutt or otherwise physically assault in a seemingly to bystanders unprompted manner. This shitbird is the 4th member. Rascal Flats, Big & rich (do they count as two or 3 if you count "Cowboy Troy") and Florida-Georgia line are the other 3.
As a country music fan. This might be the greatest thing I have ever heard...

Had a blast at the game with Midas. Ref was the worst I ever seen. At one point we had 5 yellows with 5 fouls. They had 1 yellow with 13 fouls.

Reactions: Midas Mulligan
I got a horrible sunburn. Spilled marinara all over my new pink seersucker shorts. Some guy vomited all over the water fountain by my section. I had no leg room because of some douche. The 6 train was all fucked up today. Spent 1245-9pm outside -- rained on, sweaty, constant film of skin and sweat, smelling like a grundle.

One of the best days of my life because of that effort. What a wild game. Just completely dominated for the first 60 minutes, it was strange, almost impossible win. There's literally no knowing how far this team can go, but there's no doubt of what they're capable of.

Don't let the douches steal your leg room.

Hey, hey, you guys remember that time our world class striker David Villa tracked back and tackled the ball off of Bastian Schweinsteiger and started a dangerous counter?

I do.

I do not . However i still like your post although not sure if you mean the opposite ?

still can't believe we won that game, really shows how much this team has improved being down to 10 men still managing to score first and hold a lead. Best game of the year for me

To hop on the Villa love train for a bit (sounds kinda raunchy), I tell people now that he is hands down the most competitive person I've ever witnessed play professional sports. I'm a die-hard Steelers fan, and Marquette basketball, and both of those teams have had some great players, but I'm not certain I've seen anything of the like of David Villa

Attempted to watch this game in Mexico today as I was recovering from way too much tequila the night before, plus some injuries sustained via late night ocean skinny dipping (waves knocked me right into some massive rocks), and losing my phone. It seemed every time I finally got the MLS Live to work on my laptop, some decision was going extremely poorly in our way (non-PK call and first Yangel yellow).

I really wasn't able to watch most of the game because I was fighting the internet connection here, but it really seemed like we took it to them.

I also want to re-iterate that Brillant is not nearly as horrible as most people make him out to be (though I also don't think this one game makes him great). He does have his fair share of fuck-ups, but he's a serviceable defender who know the system. I would definitely rather have a more capable CB for the money that he's making, but think he's far from the "he should never see the field again" commentary that I often see. At this point, I would rather be overpaying for him than have Jeferson Mena or Watson-Siriboe as our backup.

Another ref atrocity I have not seen mentioned was how he harassed Sean Johnson all game. Any time in the second half SJ picked up the ball he was immediately yelling at him to kick it. Doesn't he have 6 seconds from when he picks up the ball during the run of play, he was on him in less than 2 seconds almost every time? He called the game so blatantly one sided that I was seriously starting to wonder if the MLS has a ref game fixing issue similar to what the NBA went though a number of years ago.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist and usually laugh off these assertions but this was so bad, I actually wondered the same thing. We brought two friends to the game who typically don't follow MLS and had no vested interest in the outcome of the game, and they were in utter disbelief. At one point, they just sat there, mouth agape shaking their heads. "How can this be?"

The play calling was so pervasively bad that it's hard to believe anyone capable of reaching that level of incompetence could actually reach this level professionally. For that reason, there has to be another explanation.

Why must we only have one statue? I say one at every entrance.

I'll be honest, I knew and appreciated Villa was a really good player. But he's so far beyond the opinion of him that I held before watching him every match, it's like he's an entirely different player than I expected.

I think I was basing too much of my opinion on a Villa that wasn't actually fully fit again. No doubt he has actually gotten better since beginning his MLS time.

Said similar before, but I'd go a step further and say that he is definitely a top 20 in the world striker at this moment. He may be higher than that.

ETA:
(Admittedly, I'm saying 20 without even making a list in my head. It just feels right. But not sure I could name 15 better, honestly)

Falastur you tell pep to be nice to Sergio and keep him around. He's the only realistic option I could name that would work like Villa for us. Strikingly similar heart and workrates and will to win.
I'm running out of words to describe Villa on a weekly basis. Might have to create words now.

There seems to be a theory floating around that Herrera has a rep for simulation which is why he didn't get the PK call.

He did just get fined for it for an incident in the Vancouver game, and fairly so, but I cannot remember any previous incidents. Have there been others that I don't remember? Trying to rationally decide my outrage level.

That was an amazing experience. I was there with two non-soccer family members from San Diego and our new German au pair, and everyone was dumbfounded by the officiating and captivated by the drama unfolding in front of them.

God Chapman was crap. I was happy when I saw him selected for the game, but never again. So many terrible calls and all for one side. It was amazing. I kept waiting for a makeup call, and then two and then three, etc. but none came; the crap just kept on coming. It was almost Swindle in the Swamp bad.

I am going to post a thread about that biased fuck to catalogue the bad calls and then post a poll to determine the stinkiest load of crap he deposited on our beautiful turf yesterday.

Nothing to be said about Villa that hasn't already been said, but it bears repeating, endlessly. The guy leaves everything he has on the field. I kept pointing out to my guests that he could easily jog around and score a few goals, collect his millions and keep everyone happy. But he puts forth all the effort and does all the little things - not because he has to but because he loves the game and keeps a high standard for himself and hates hates hates to lose. So many examples of that yesterday.

What a tremendous job by our team - both in terms of effort and skill. To hold off that team for 90 minutes playing 10 on 12... we'll, it's epic. This is one we will remember for a long long time.

Are you referring to the tweets by Doyle? My thought on how this went:

1. Chapman blows an obvious call
2. Doyle (and all the other MLS guys) state "that ref is an idiot, stone cold penalty"
3. League/PRO sends a message "umm, got to support our refs, explain the call"
4. Subsequent "theory" about Yangel being a simulator comes out.

One more thing on Yangel, all those people saying he's going to man city next year can all calm down - some pretty cold ice water over the head for the last two games. Reminds you that the kid is only 19, will have bad games, and also needs to become more mature. Hopefully PV sits him down and talks this one out with him. You know, hard ass midfielder to hard ass midfielder.

A couple of follow ups after reading through the thread.

I don't think either of Herrera's yellows count toward yellow card accumulation, but it is possible that one will count. That would put him on 4 Yellows. I am fairly certain that he will not be hit with both to get to 5.

The rule on location of the foul for determining a PK is where the contact is initiated. The only type of foul that continues for the entire length of contact is holding. If you start a hold outside the box and continue holding inside the box, that's a penalty.

More needs to be said about Brillant. He was really good today and deserves credit after getting so much crap (rightfully) for the last few games. Not only was he solid defensively, not only did he score the winning goal, but he sacrificed his body for the cause. He was down twice, including getting kicked in the head on his goal, and powered on. You have to wonder if he should have been out there, but he was more than solid.

When we went down a man my five year old turned to me and asked, if we now win "will it go into history?" I told him that it would definitely be a game we never forget. Yup.

I think people have just typecast him as "a CONCACAF player." He's young, talented, aggressive. I don't know if he complains more than average, but he's not really the "strong, silent, play-through-it" type either. And he can oversell legit fouls a little—not really simulation, but a degree of youthful overacting when trying to make the foul "stick." In combination, folks just don't cut him any slack.

Maybe I'm unfairly projecting r/MLS attitude about City onto the refs, but it seems to me that they whistle him like they're trying to put him in his place. Even Ring, who's just as aggressive, gets more leeway. (I say, completely without data to back it up.) Looks to me like it's a personal thing against Yangel as a "type."

In any case, that's at least what Chapman was doing yesterday, to my eye. The calls were inexcusable. Not about the fouls, or even game control at that point. Just a dominance display against a young player who got under his skin
