Expansion Rumors Megathread

Thank god. We did not need more "Insert City here" FC or other incredibly dull crap.
What could be some fun St. Louis team names?

I'm gonna go ahead and vote for Country Grammar Soccer Club

St. Louis SC
St. Louis United
Sporting St. Louis
Real St. Louis
St. Louis Cardenals

all they said was 'it won't be St. Louis FC'. That leaves a LOT of room. lmao

I personally love the older, cheesier names. "Sounders" "Earthquakes" (at the time) "Metrostars", "revolution" "union", "galaxy", "timbers", are great! Hope they can start a trend of bringing that back. All the other major US sports use that naming scheme, and I think if you really want to capture a US audience, that's a way to do it. ...Also I'd have loved to see the "Orlando Lions vs Minnesota Loons" lol

I generally agree. A few of the older names were clearly busts, but many are really good - Sounders, Timbers, Galaxy, Earthquakes, Whitecaps, Rapids and (yes) Fire. Original, pertinent to each city, and worth keeping. I wish more teams had the guts to give those kinds of names a try.

Why weren't we the New York Pizza Rats? /s

The owner said on a radio broadcast that the "St. Louis Archers" was popular among fans she talked to, but they are very early in the process.

I wouldn't hate it. It feels like a 1910's baseball nickname crafted by a sports journalist (if the arch had been constructed then, of course).

Despite all the smoke, I my gut is telling me Sacramento is getting left at the alter again despite two more open spots.

I think MLS likes Charlotte's investors more than Sacramento's and likes Vegas as a market more than Sacramento. David Tepper is an order of magnitude more wealthy than Ron Burkle. And while Vegas and Sacramento are roughly the same size, MLS is about to aggressively hit up the gambling industry for corporate sponsorships.

I think they're going to give Charlotte and Las Vegas a few months to hit some milestones, and if they do, they'll jump Sacramento. The Republic would be back in the mix for #31 and #32 if they expand again, but by then there will be other new bids to compete with. Oof.

Are you factoring in Contraction when NYCFC only has 1583 STH next season?

It’s not as if nobody saw this coming for ‘ol Becks..... wasn’t it universally known the entire site was a contaminated mess below the surface (not to mention, what about all the golfers exposed to the pollution walking the links - that’s never discussed but don’t see how a top layer of soil/grass would protect them) ?!?!

With speculation over St. Louis' name, I checked the chronology of MLS expansion by name. Here it is in order beginning in 2008.

San Jose Earthquakes
Seattle Sounders
Philadelphia Union
Vancouver Whitecaps
Portland Timbers
Montreal Impact
New York City FC
Orlando City SC
Atlanta United
Minnesota United
LAFC
FC Cincinnatti
Inter Miami
Nashville SC
Austin FC
St. Louis???

That gives you six original names, inspired by their respective hometowns, followed by nine generic names that include 4 Football Clubs, 2 Uniteds, 2 Soccer Clubs, and Inter Miami.

Lets hope St. Louis breaks the trend.

If they somehow incorporate Toasted Ravioli into their name or badge, I'll buy a jersey.

St Louis Arches?

St. Louis already has a USL team, St Louis FC. I assumed this is the same club to play in MLS, no?
