The issue we have is that of the 4 midfielders we are debating, all 4 of them are central midfielders. So, going to 4 in the midfield does absolutely nothing for us since none of those guys are going to play LM or RM.

The one possible approach is to stick with the 4-3-3 and move Maxi to the wing - which was said to be one possible position for him when he was signed (and I think he's shifted out there during a game or two this season). I think it's clear that Maxi is better as a center attacking mid, so you lose something (perhaps a lot) shifting him wide. But if you think it's enough of an upgrade to have Pirlo on and whomever is left wing off, it's not crazy.

Not that I would attempt it with our roster, but I think a three man backline that has Herrera in it would be absolutely insane.

What a waste of arguably our best box to box player that's shown the stamina, passing vision and open field tacking ability needed to completely boss the midfield.

Sweat would be part of my 3 man back

What have you seen from Sweat that indicates he could play CB in a 3 man backline? Nearly all of the positive contributions he's made while filling in for Mata have come on the offensive end.

I literally said I wouldn't attempt it with this roster. He is too valuable in the midfield for us. But you don't think he'd also be a beast in a 3 man backline where he also has the ability to get somewhat forward like a stopper? I would disagree with you, and it is why Herrera will fetch a big price tag when he does get sold. He can realistically play anywhere centrally.

which again includes a 4 game win streak against not so great teams, and im not trying to take anything away from those wins.
Were the results with Pirlo on the field against better competition? I would argue no.

2 losses against Orlando
1 win and 1 loss against DCU
1 draw against Montreal
1 win against SJ
1 win against Philly
1 loss to RSL
1 loss to Vancouver

sorry guys i only comment here from 9-5, cant be using my free time on this but im back now.

so i was thinking about it more and for tomorrow's game id be playing a 4-4-2

Fully healthy id like to try a 3-4-3 back line consisting of Mata, Chanot, and Callens. Midfield Herrera Maxi Ring and Pirlo, Forwards Wallace, Villa, and Harrison.

Im ready for you guys to tell me how stupid i am.

Dude, throw in the towel, the fight has been called. Now you know why all the other Pirlo obsessors have gone back to lurking. You cannot make a logical argument that he should be starting. Even with your idea that we should screw up every other position on the field, just to accommodate a guy that can barely move anymore, Sands should be ahead of Grampa on the depth chart. The team, when healthy, is one of, if not the, best team in the league, why fuck with it just so you can watch your hero embarrass himself some more? There is plenty of youtube to watch of the glory days. How many more horrendous free kicks can you stand?
