Chicago postmatch

That was singularly the worst refereeing I've seen at a match Pitchside. I'm going to start bringing a sign with me now that says "GO TO VAR" since our next home match they'll be using it. Allen Chapman was horrific today, horrific. He's notable one of the better referees and he was even in the VAR videos yesterday during the talk with Howard Webb but my God not even according to the rules of VAR would that have saved his ass. Herrera, clear as day penalty. First yellow, absolutely criminal. And if you're going to call that a yellow, everything remotely close has to be one too and Chicago deserved way more. Vieira was livid, the people Pitchside were more livid the entire game. Chapman call a game well at all, especially not in the heat. The sun must have gotten to that bald head of his.

Herrera will be out for Toronto next week. But he's accumulated five yellow cards now, so is that another game? If so, that would be vs Red Bull at home.

Even after cooling down now I'm more pissed off at the referees than joyous about how resilient our guys were out there today. Villa is the best player in the league. He leaves everything out there. He was beaten and battered today and still made defensive plays when he needed to. The defense stepped up. Brillant played well and will have to with Chanot out 4-6 weeks. The Milkman delivered all the necessary saves.

I still think the outlook is grim considering all the injuries and now Herrera gone one match (or possibly two). But my God, all I can think about today is the shit performance by the guys in yellow.

I don't think I was more vocal that today. Schwini personally said "Fuck you" to me. Such industrial language from the German. And the Chicago head coach was complaining that we were trash talking there players. I said to him, "Your All Star selections are terrible." This is a game to remember. The talent level of MLS is low but more so if the referring. I wish PRO would have paid to get Mark Clattenburg here rather than him be in Saudi Arabia now.

I have zero issues with anything our players did today, that included Hererra. The Ref had him marked because nobody fcks over a PK call and then promptly gives two yellows without warning. The ref was also the most incompetent douche I've ever seen ref, and we've had two other games this year where that was the case with the gold standard of shiftiness until today. Nycfc should really lodge a formal complaint to the league that we're not getting equal treatment from the officials. Call 15 PKs in a game if they warrant it, but don't hold it against us if we consistently earn one in the first 10min (referring to Maxi's non-call) - feels like the refs don't want to change the outcome of the match so early, which is surprising considering this douche made us play with 10 for 80min on the surface of the sun.

Villa is a soccer god! Brillant showed some ridiculous moxy in defense and getting a rebound header goal off his header shot. Lewis needs to be #1 offensive sub off the bench, or until Wallace returns the LW starter. Ring went another game with no yellow???? How about that spin move on the sideline by Jack that froze 3-4 Chicago players that couldn't move (jelly legs?) - that was worse than a nutmeg because their entire team was left flat footed, just a shame it didn't lead to a goal.

The bigger item to notice is that while we were a man down, we played a very aggressive counter-attack.... meaning that it wasn't just bunker/counter, but they pushed guys into the attack for "sustained" periods. Maybe PV has learned that we are most dangerous when we play offensively????

Also interesting that in a game where we were hurting for speed, our subs were only Mikey (top 3-5 fastest guy on team and "defender" for Sweat, and Okoli (mediocre speed but offensive nose for goal), we didn't use RJ at all. He's either tapped-out from the heat Wednesday (not likely considering how many guys also played today) or he's in thePV doghouse with that PK/subsequent Yellow for mouthing off. Pirlo and TMac were never going to see the field in a game where speed/legs paid dividends, and a little surprising Awuah was held off for so long - in any other game RJ would have been tapped to give the team a guy to harass but not today.... that speaks volumes with PV's history.

We need our physios to work some miracles in the next week!!!! Luckily, if the USMNT wins tonight, Toronto won't have Bradley and Altidore playing next week - we need them to be depleted since we're the walking wounded.

You'd never have known that was 11 v 10. Great performance by the lads and we didn't park the bus either - was still a fairly even game that we won entirely on merit.

Delighted for Lewis to get a start and if he can build up his confidence he'll be a regular starter pretty soon.

The reason Basti was available to help Villa out with a cramp is because Basti was so tired that he stopped playing and basically took himself out of play. He just gave up during the run of play and took a break. He then saw Villa and then decided to continue his self imposed break. Villa heart > Basti heart.

I was thinking the same thing when it happened - not as much a show of altruism as Bastian didn't want to run to our half.

Sweat was down flat-out unconscious for, what, two minutes? I have to presume that means some amount of concussion.

Should we expect him to be out of the 18 for Toronto?
Who knows - concussion protocol really only cover the match. Obviously if he's still showing signs next week he doesn't play, but I don't think there's a mandatory time frame to sit out.

Ref was completely shocking today too - a number of calls I couldnt' believe especially the free kick we got just outside the box that even the replay seemed to show was inside the box. (Anyone know the exact rule about where to award the kick, whether it's where it starts, or if the foul continues on? Feel as though I've seen both interpretations)

And as for Herrera - not sure I saw either foul but, come on guy, if you're already on a yellow after three minutes, don't do whatever it was that led to the second.

And finally, not to take anything away from our boys making this win happen with skill and will, but I was shocked to see how Chicago completely failed to exploit the extra space provided by being up a player. They're supposedly the best team in MLS right now, and they should have broken us over their knee after Herrera went off. What was up with them?

In the second half, despite conceding two goals they started to look more lethal, but I was amazed at both how little advantage they took of us and so proud of how we didn't let them.

Supposed to be where the foul takes place. Seemed like the Chicago player was outside of the box and we were in the box. Should have been a PK. That's actually two PKs he didn't award us today. We could have legitimately blown Chicago out playing down a man for 80min in 90+degree heat.

This is a good point - for a team at the top of the table, you would expect them to have done a lot better. We made them look well shite.

But, credit to the boys - Vieira made a switch in formation that made us very narrow and, when they had to, every one of the players was behind the ball.

If PV took the time to read the Forums, he'd have made these moves weeks ago. White is the best Right Back we have and Lewis finally starts at a wing opposite Jack. He's only just enacted what many of us have been calling for forever.

Chicago tends to exploit space given to them by opposing teams, and so they don't seem to handle playing bunkering teams very well. Just think about the Orlando game where Orlando was down to 10 men for most of the match, and eventually went down to 9, and the game ended in a 0-0 draw

Another ref atrocity I have not seen mentioned was how he harassed Sean Johnson all game. Any time in the second half SJ picked up the ball he was immediately yelling at him to kick it. Doesn't he have 6 seconds from when he picks up the ball during the run of play, he was on him in less than 2 seconds almost every time? He called the game so blatantly one sided that I was seriously starting to wonder if the MLS has a ref game fixing issue similar to what the NBA went though a number of years ago.
