Commentators on Twitter are supporting your position by noting that even "passive" interference with an attempted shot in the form of the attacker catching part of the defender is often given as a foul. I guess this falls into the category where I get grumpy that fouls get called on players who have no agency in the fouling action.
There was zero marking on that play and the defenders weren’t even playing the trap.... USA got lucky and it was so razor thin I wouldn’t have argued if it was allowed to stand.
Hell, even the keeper stayed on her line rather than charge out.... so many mistakes.

I don't see Saurbrunn as having no agency there. The play is in front of her. White, with the ball, is in front of her. You can't clip the player's foot from behind. It wasn't intentional by any means, but that doesn't mean she didn't have an opportunity, and agency to avoid it.
But it's moot because England can't take PKs anywhere ever, and this one was especially terrible.
Really? All of the many replays looked to me like Sauerbrunn's leg was going to come down in stride where it did regardless of whether there was an attacker's leg there or not.

It’s hard to know for sure. I think it’s possible she felt her only play was to give the attacker a little nudge from behind and knock her off. It was subtle and smart and she almost got away with it.

I assume the Offsides on England that called back the Goal. If you were talking about another play, my apologies.
If the offsides, then I disagree - I wouldn’t be livid over the call if the goal stood because it was razor thin and the US blew the marking, got lucky on the offsides since they weren’t actively playing it, and the keeper was flat footed.
