Chicago postmatch

And finally, not to take anything away from our boys making this win happen with skill and will, but I was shocked to see how Chicago completely failed to exploit the extra space provided by being up a player. They're supposedly the best team in MLS right now, and they should have broken us over their knee after Herrera went off. What was up with them?

In the second half, despite conceding two goals they started to look more lethal, but I was amazed at both how little advantage they took of us and so proud of how we didn't let them.

Thankfully they waited till we had about 15 min left before they started moving the ball side to side and making our dead tired guys shift constantly.

Chicago tends to exploit space given to them by opposing teams, and so they don't seem to handle playing bunkering teams very well. Just think about the Orlando game where Orlando was down to 10 men for most of the match, and eventually went down to 9, and the game ended in a 0-0 draw
They've been so good all year that I think it's been forgotten that Chicago has been the worst team for years, and that shittiness is ingrained into the psyche of their long-tenured players. They had the advantage, but they were too nervous to exploit it for fear of being exposed while holding the advantage. If we ever think our guys are weak-minded with the late game collapses, we need to remind ourselves that Chicago is a bunch of scared children playing with a few seasoned veterans. Today could actually be the straw that breaks their back - to lose a game when they held every card and didn't, or couldn't, stamp their will on the game.

Don't think it's been mentioned yet but the foul that got Herrera sent off the chicago player was down for a while but was not asked to get off the field before coming back into play. Villa was harassing Chapman about this as it happened and he seemed to be too busy attempting to blow the game to care. What am I missing here that the guy got treatment and didn't have to leave, wtf?

The shittiness is very much a part of Chicago's history but I think you're wildly over estimating how much the current players have been a part of. Chicago doesn't have a single player on the roster that was on the team in 2014 and only 4 of their current players were even around for 2015. The new coaching staff has completely transformed the roster since taking over.

Don't underestimate last year as being the shittiness in their head. Take Bastian and Dax away, hell, after today take only Dax away, and they are not a top 2 team in the league. If that match isn't a wake up call to their players and coaches, then they're delusional. That was a horrible performance by a club holding all of the cards.

Wednesday night's PV would have parked the bus today a man down and played for a point. In fact, most managers would have done that. I like brave PV better. I love brave PV. I would still have loved brave PV if we would have lost 3-2. Let the players be warriors. And they were.

It's a valid point last year they were terrible. I'm still shocked they are doing so well after such a high degree roster turn over. I hadn't thought about it until we were on our way to the game and my wife started asking which of the Chicago players she knows will be playing (We lived in Chicago 2011-2014).

Her: Who from Chicago that I know is still on the team?
Me: No one
Her: Magee? Nyarko? Larentowicz? Rolfe?
Me: Nope, Nope, Nope, Nope...........Um.....Sean Johnson will be there!

Reps for everyone. Huge win. Gutsiest in our history.

I trust even mgarbowski mgarbowski would have to agree, despite our prior big game struggles.
Missed the game to go to my godmother's 80th birthday party in the way way-outs of Long Island. Could listen to entire game thanks to standard LIE traffic status. Disappointing to miss, but still excited about this game. I take it the first two Herrera calls were absurd (the no-pk and the first yellow).

Could tell even on radio that we seemed to have the better of play in the first half after YH was sent off. Hoped against hope we could pull this out and pumped as hell with our two scores. Only thing I couldn't sense was extent of bunkering vs. being aggressive in the end. Glad to hear we stayed fairly on the front foot.

Aggressive all game - no bunkering in the true sense, but rather amazing team defense. Calls on Hererra were horrible.

Villa has had Luca (his son) with him for 3 matches this season. Atlanta at home, Seattle, and today. Villa has scored, and played great games in all 3 of those matches.

Forget the long sleeves, Luca is the lucky charm!

Is that Maxi's son?

I'm starting to wonder just how Human David Villa is ?? It's gone well past Super Hero status at this point ! WE DON'T have to win some title or cup at the end of the season !! We Have The Best Player and Captain This League Could Ever Ask For !! We're Winners Everyday with the like of him . We are Truly Blessed by his Presence ! No I'm not in love with the man even though he has beautiful eyes and a sweet smile and larger than life personality No .

But I'll take all the Love I have for 12 years for Andrea and match that with respect and awe for David !...David to me is the Success story where the other David (Beckham) Failed ! NYCFC fans with their what have you done for me lately attitude don't deserve this man as your Captain your too stupid to really appreciate what you have !! BUT OUR BATMAN will play his little Spanish ass off with his Heart on his sleeves Long or Short that is for You People every time . God Bless You David ! The Pope Loves Football ...He'll Saint You !!

Looked bunkered to me. Banks of four about ten yards apart and allowing them the ball well into our third was bunkered to me. Chicago looked like they didn't want the ball. I would guess they've had a lot of success on the counter attack. That said, Villa was a one man counter attack.

We were dominating the first twelve minutes though. Thought we'd win, and felt really shitty when the ref fucked up the whole game.
